In my opinion, the greatest generals of all time has several competitors, all of them during the Three Kingdoms period of China. They are: Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Zhuge Liang, and Lu Bu. A short description of each:
The former three were sworn brothers. Liu Bei was the elder brother, Guan Yu the second, and Zhang Fei the third.
Liu Bei was the emperor of Shu Han, and originally a general. He had average skills in combat, and he used a sword. He was very good at raising morale, and when he moved around, the people in the cities usually followed him to show their respect. He used a scimitar named the Green Dragon.
Guan Yu was a very loyal general to Liu Bei, and extremely strong. He once traveled over 500 kilometers to reunite with Liu Bei, defeating 7 enemy generals single-handedly on the way.
Zhang Fei was also very loyal, but was no doubt one of the best fighters in history. He once defeated an enemy army of about 100000 with only his spear, horse and armor.
Zhao Yun was a strong general under Liu Bei's command. He once saved the royal prince when he was surrounded by the same 100000 enemy troops above, also only with his equipment.
Zhuge Liang was brilliant. He was fended off 5 armies without losing a single soldier, and easily captured a barbarian chief 7 times in succession to win his loyalty. In his last stroke of brilliance, he ordered his troops to create a wooden statue after his death, which scared the enemy troops into retreating without even fighting. His brilliant tactics were uncountable, take a look at the Wikipedia article for some.
Lu Bu was no doubt the number one warrior of all time. He once fought Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei at the same time for more than 100 matches, and they only drew even. Sadly, he was unloyal, and when he was finally defeated, he was hanged immediately.
